Een goede leidraad wanneer je eender welk aspect van je leven je wil gaan verduurzamen, is het credo 'reduce, reuse, recycle'. Deze drie R's zijn de holy trinity als het op duurzaam consumeren aankomt. Ook voor cosmetica kan je dit toepassen: door de hoeveelheid producten en verpakkingen te beperken, ze te hergebruiken én correct te recycleren wordt het easy peasy om jouw ecologische voetafdruk te verkleinen.
Reduce: afval verminderen
Reduce (of reductie) doe je simpelweg door enkel te focussen op wat je echt nodig hebt of door multifunctionele producten aan te schaffen. Maar ook door kritisch te kijken naar verpakkingen: zit er extra folie om een flesje? Bevat een verpakking overbodige plastics? Staat het volume van de verpakking niet in verhouding tot de inhoud van het product zelf? Het zijn allemaal vragen die je jezelf kunt stellen vooraleer je iets aankoopt.

Reuse: meer dan één keer gebruiken
Reuse (of hergebruik) kijkt naar hoe je bepaalde items opnieuw kunt gebruiken alvorens je ze vervangt. Weg dus met single use products. Denk voor je badkamer aan wegwerpwattenschijfjes, -staafjes, -sponsjes en -gezichtsdoekjes - en vervang die door de herbruikbare versie. Daarnaast vallen ook refillables binnen deze categorie: is je verzorgingsproduct leeg, dan vervang je het door een refill: die is goedkoper én bevat veel minder verpakkingsmateriaal. Tot slot mijd je uiteraard natuurlijk ook liever plastic tasjes wanneer je jouw beauty producten shopt. Recycle (of recycleren) slaat tot slot op het correct recycleren van lege verpakkingen. Goed recycleerbare materialen zijn glas, karton, aluminium en sommige plastics. Belangrijk voor dit recyclageproces is wel dat de verschillende onderdelen van een lege verpakking afzonderlijk worden gesorteerd. Bestaat een leeg flesje bijvoorbeeld uit een glazen flacon en een plastic tube, dan gaat het flesje in de glascontainer en de tube bij het PMD.
